Orchid Asana’s Philosophy

In the West, yoga can lean towards focus on the physical body.  The asanas, or postures, practiced on the mat help to strengthen your body, increase flexibility and balance, and develop focus – lessons that can also be applied in your daily life.  However, the traditional definition of yoga is “to yoke or create union” and refers to creating a connection between the body and the mind.  Combining the practices of asana, pranayama (breathing), dharana (focused concentration) and dhyana (meditation) works to develop this connection and can help to manage attention deficit disorder as well as reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.*  Thus, Orchid Asana emphasizes yoga as a holistic practice, meaning it benefits the whole person.

Yoga Practice

There are a number of styles of asana practice.  Orchid Asana primarily focuses on two types:  Slow Vinyasa and Restorative. In Slow Vinyasa yoga you mindfully flow through asanas at a slower pace with an emphasis on coordinating movement to breath.

During a Restorative practice you relax into an asana with your body supported by yoga props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks allowing you to feel nurtured.  It is common to be in a pose for 5 to 20 minutes.  While all types of yoga can help to reduce stress, Restorative yoga emphasizes slowing down and relaxing; a great way to take a pause during our generally hectic lives.

What do orchids have to do with yoga?

KC, the owner of Orchid Asana, is an orchid enthusiast – so much so that it is one of her nicknames!  She does her best to grow the beautiful plants which have a reputation for being finicky and difficult.  Just like orchids we may feel that we are difficult to take care of.  However, she believes that no one is so complex that they can’t be nurtured.  She has found that one of the best ways to take care of yourself is through a consistent asana practice as well as working to incorporate the Eight Limbs of Yoga into your life.  Through these you can learn the best way to connect with your true nature.  To a large degree Orchid Asana is about embracing and loving yourself exactly where you are in the present moment.  This helps create balance in your life, allowing you to blossom into your authentic self, and be present in your body and mind.

*Yoga is not a replacement for a Doctor’s care.  Rather it can be a helpful complimentary treatment.
